UNC Basketball History

The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is the oldest public university in the United States, beginning operations in 1795. UNC is one of the original “Public Ivy” schools. In addition to its educational reputation, UNC is also well-known for its strong athletics program, most notably, as you all now, for basketball. UNC is the most successful college basketball programs in the country and has been an elite basketball program for almost a century now. Some of the NBA’s best players have gone through Chapel Hill, including the best NBA player ever in Michael Jordan, once described as playing basketball better than anyone else has ever done anything else.

UNC Basketball play home games at the Dean Smith Center. The Dean Smith Center can hold 21,750, and is one of the most storied stadiums in all of college basketball. The Dean Dome opened in 1986 and was expanded in 1992.

UNC Basketball is a member of the ACC (Atlantic Coast Conference). Other teams in the ACC are Duke, Wake Forest, Miami, Boston College, Clemson and Virginia Tech among others.

UNC basketball History

UNC Basketball has won four NCAA Championships (1957, 1982, 1993, 2005) and appeared in eight NCAA Final Games total. UNC Basketball has been in the Final Four 17 times and been invited to the NCAA tournament 40 times. UNC also won the NIT tournament in 1971. North Carolina has enjoyed being a #1 ranked seed entering the NCAA tournament a whopping 12 times. They have also beaten #1 teams a record 12 times, while they have ended the season ranked #1 five times. The Tarheels have won 17 ACC tournament titles.

As of the beginning of this season, UNC has an astounding 73.6% percent winning percentage, that dates all the way back to the 1910-11 season. The Tarheels also hold the distinction of holding the most number of 20-win seasons, 31 seasons in a row from 1971 – 2001.

There have been tons of legendary UNC basketball players that have donned the blue and white. Some were great in college, some went on to NBA success, either are players, coaches or both, and others made their presence known as members of the media. here are some of the most well-known UNC players.:

  • Brendan Haywood, recorded the first triple-double in UNC History in 2001 with an 18 point, 14 rebound and 10 block game.
